How to Maintain a Healthy Lymphatic System


One of the most important organ systems in the humans is the lymphatic system. It is a network of lymphatic vessels that carry and drain lymph throughout the body. Lymph is a whitish fluid, similar in composition to blood plasma. It is found in all body tissues and contains proteins, glucose, salts and lymphocytes, which are also known as white blood cells. The lymphatic system consists of lymphatic tissue, the lymph capillaries and vessels, and the lymph nodes. Lymphatic tissue is primarily found in the spleen, thymus gland, tonsils, and the bone marrow. The capillaries are found in all parts of the body, except the bone marrow, central nervous system and the epidermis.

The lymphatic nodes are oval-shaped structures that are absent in the nervous system, but are found concentrated in the groin, armpits and neck regions. The lymphatic system works along with immune system to destroy pathogens, filtering excess waste, dead blood cells, and toxins from the body's bloodstream, and increase the count of white blood cells which in turn create antibodies, thus helping to ward off any infections and illnesses.

For the human body to function at its best, it is crucial for all organ systems to operate optimally and the same goes for the lymphatic nodes too. It is important for the body to maintain healthy lymphatic nodes to fight off any infection. An unhealthy system can lead to low immunity which can ultimately lead to diseases, or if the fluid is not drained out, it can lead to fluid retention which is medically known as edema.

Eat Well

An intake of healthy food is vital to keep the system functioning smoothly. What we eat can have an impact on our body, either helping or obstructing the flow of lymph. Include lots of green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits in your diet. Fruits and vegetables contain certain enzymes which are powerful lymph cleaners. Drink plenty of water. Water helps prevent the build-up of toxins and helps to flush them out of the system. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

Exercise Regularly

Keeping up a healthy exercise regimen is very important. The more you move, the more active your bodily systems are, and that assists in detoxification. Simple exercises like riding a bike, swimming, jogging and walking help in strengthening the cardiovascular system and muscles and stimulate blood circulation.

Regular exercise helps to keep formation of excess cholesterol at bay, purges the body of harmful toxins and fortifies the immune system, which in turn promotes a healthy lymphatic system. If you cannot find time for exercising, make it a point to take the stairs instead of the elevators, walk while you talk on the phone, and do routine chores that keep you mobile.

Avoid Stress

Elimination of toxins by this method enhances lymphatic flow. Be sure to use a dry, clean brush. Do not rub the skin too vigorously and avoid rubbing in circular motions. The best way is to start from the body extremities and gently rub towards the abdomen.
